Heart Attack Prevention: What is Your Cholesterol Goal

Are you at risk for heart attack? A good place to start is your cholesterol level.

Stages of Coronary Disease

When I was in training we spent a lot of time discussing ‘lipids.’ We learned about LDL, HDL, triglycerides and what was ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cholesterol. We were then told what medications to put the patients on after giving them a short lecture on ‘diet and exercise.’

Nowadays I do more. We talk in depth about diet, sugar, sleep, hormones, and I recommend patients get a lipid ion mobility test if they have unhealthy cholesterol levels or if they have a strong family history of cardiovascular disease.

Lipid ion mobility studies give a detailed analysis of the density of the lipoproteins in your blood (LDL or ‘bad cholesterol’ and HDL ‘good cholesterol). Depending your health history and your levels you may be a candidate for yearly monitoring, or it may be time to get serious about your cholesterol.
